Film, Northern Soul, hits the cinema screens across the country today. It’s the tale of two Northern boys whose worlds are changed forever when they discover black American soul music.
Northern Soul was a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Wales in the late 1960s. It consisted of a predominantly black American soul music style but was based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid 1960s Tamla Motown sound.
It was popular with British youths and took the North of the country by storm. As it’s film makers say …. If you were there, you’ll know. If you weren’t there, you’ll wish you had been.
Northern Soul is set to start a craze with some great dance floor manoeuvres that people will be donning their dance shoes for all over the country. It has possibly one of the best soundtracks to grace the cinema and features everyone who contributed to making the movement so popular.
Northern Soul was written and directed by Elaine Constantine and stars many great names from British TV and music, including Antonia Thomas, Steve Coogan, Ricky Tomlinson, John Thompson and Lisa Stansfield to name a few.
